Volunteer opportunity description

Vauxhall Park (SW8 1JZ)is the proud owner of Central London's only lavender field - given to the Park by Vauxhall Motors to celebrate their cetenary in 2003 (yes, they really did start in Vauxhall!).

Harvesting the lavender

On Saturday 9 September, the Friends of Vauxhall Park will be organising the havesting of the flowers.

Flowers are picked and then taken to be distilled into oil which is sold for the benefit of the park.  We will be in the lavender field from 10am and could really use your help - there's lots of lavender to harvest!  Please bring gloves and, if you can, secateurs/shears.  We do have some tools but would be grateful if you could bring some.  We will keep going until the late afternoon.  Hopefully the sun will be shining, you could be in the South of France, surrounded by the bewitching lavender!

Vauxhall Park is just next to the Vauxhall transport interchange so easily accessible by tube, bus and overground train.  There is free parking on the streets surrounding the park.

Would be great if you can bring your own gloves and secateurs and/or shears, if possible.  Otherwise no special requirements but please be aware that bees love the lavender as much as we do!  You will be cutting the flower stems and putting them into large sacks - that's it!
