Volunteer opportunity description

BuddyHub connects a lonely or isolated 'Senior' member with up to three like-minded 'Buddy' volunteers who live no more than a 30-minute walk or cycle away.

Seniors and Buddies are carefully matched based on their interests and experiences. The three Buddies and the Senior will form what we call a ‘Friendship Wheel’.

The Buddies in the ‘Friendship Wheel’ will share visits either one-to-one or as a group with their Senior, making this a fun and flexible commitment that people can incorporate into their busy lives.

By becoming a Buddy,  you will also be widening your own social circle. Everyone looks out for each other so you’re more likely to feel supported and valued. That’s what we're all about: making friends and enjoying each other’s company.

Expenses:  We do not reimburse volunteer expenses as we don’t expect volunteers' would usually incur them.

  • Commitment. We ask a minimum engagement of one visit of 1-2 hours every 3 weeks for a year after we match you.
  • Are you in the area? We are operating in Islington, Hackney, Haringey and City of London. Check your postcode here.
  • Getting to know you. You’ll need to fill out your profile on our website.
  • Essentials. We’ll need to apply for an Enhanced DBS Certificate (£13.50) for you if you don’t have one that has been issued within the last 2 years and/ or checks the Adults’ Barred List.*
  • Meet us in person. You’ll be invited for a friendly Welcome Chat at our offices before we match you with your Senior.
  • Useful advice. You will need to go through our Buddy Training Manual before meeting your Senior.
  • Age limit. Buddies must be over 18. That's all about it!

* Working with vulnerable adults is a regulated activity in the UK. BuddyHub requires all potential volunteers to have an Enhanced DBS Certificate that has checked the Adults’ Barred List. A conviction for a crime will not necessarily be a bar to volunteering with BuddyHub. We will take into account factors such as age at the time of the offense, type of offense and remoteness of the offense in time. Rehabilitation will also be taken into account in determining a person's suitability to volunteer with us.
