Volunteer opportunity description

BuddyHub connects a Senior (a lonely/isolated older person) with up to three like-minded Buddies (our volunteers) who live no more than a 30-minute walk away. Seniors and Buddies are carefully matched based on their interests and experiences. The three Buddies and the Senior will form what we call a ‘Friendship Wheel’, getting to know each other in a fun and flexible way.

The Buddies in the ‘Friendship Wheel’ will share visits with the Senior, making this a flexible commitment that people can incorporate into their busy lives. You will only need to commit to a minimum of 1-2 hours every 3 weeks. But a lot of good can come from just one hour.

By becoming a Buddy,  you will not only be helping to alleviate loneliness in your area, you will also be widening your own social circle. Everyone looks out for each other so you’re more likely to feel supported and valued as a volunteer. That’s what it’s all about: making friends and enjoying each other’s company.

Expenses:  We do not reimburse volunteer expenses as we don’t expect volunteers' would usually incur them.

Requirements

  • Commitment. We ask a minimum engagement of one visit of 1-2 hours every 3 weeks for a year after we match you.
  • Are you in the area? We are operating in Islington, Hackney, Haringey and City of London. Check your postcode here.
  • Getting to know you. You’ll need to fill out your profile.
  • Essentials. We’ll need to apply for an Enhanced DBS Certificate (£13.50) for you if you don’t have one that has been issued within the last 2 years and/ or checks the Adults’ Barred List.*
  • Useful advice. You will need to go through our Buddy Training Manual.
  • Meet us in person. You’ll be invited for a friendly welcome chat at our offices before we match you with your Senior.
  • Age limit. Buddies must be over 18. That's all about it!

* Working with vulnerable adults is a regulated activity in the UK. BuddyHub requires all potential volunteers to have an Enhanced DBS Certificate that has checked the Adults’ Barred List. A conviction for a crime will not necessarily be a bar to volunteering with BuddyHub. We will take into account factors such as age at the time of the offense, type of offense and remoteness of the offense in time. Rehabilitation will also be taken into account in determining a person's suitability to volunteer with us.
