Volunteer opportunity description

Provide one-to-one, practical support to our inspirational refugee clients, to help them access employment/education and fulfil their potential. Volunteers tailor support for each client, and may be helping to build CVs, search and apply for jobs, and preparing clients for interviews.

About Breaking Barriers

Breaking Barriers provides unique and innovative support to help refugees into employment and thus rebuild their lives. Our support is open to all refugees who live in London, and we offer a holistic service to support refugees to find meaningful employment that is commensurate with their skills, experience and qualifications.

Key responsibilities:

Provide practical support to clients to help them achieve their career aspirations. Tasks include:

  • Searching and applying for jobs in a range of fields

  • Providing guidance on how to write CVs and cover letters

  • Interview preparation and mock interviews

  • Familiarisation with UK workplace culture and performance expectations.

  • Supporting clients to improve their English writing and speaking skills

Finally, please note we are always looking for volunteers to support in other areas of the charity, so if you would like to help out but you don't think you would like to become an IAG adviser, please register your interest and tell us more.

To be eligible, volunteers must confirm:

  • I am available to volunteer for 2 hour appointments, on Thursdays, taking place between 10am-5pm (exact appointment times are flexible throughout the day)

  • I can commit to 3-6 months of volunteering regularly (ie. 4 appointments per month)

  • I can bring my own laptop

  • I can provide 2 references 

Skills Required:

  • previous UK work experience and knowledge of the UK job market.

  • Excellent communication skills, including fluent/native level of English

  • Compassion and ability to adapt your approach to suit clients at various points in their journey

    to employment

  • Reliability, flexibility and intiative

  • Confident with computers (MS Word and email)

  • Beneficial: other language skills (including Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Tigrinya, Amharic, Somali, Pashto, Tamil etc)

Unfortunately we are unable to cover volunteer expenses, but we do provide tea, coffee and biscuits, along with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
