Volunteer opportunity description

Action Tutoring is an education charity working in partnership with schools, to support young people facing socio-economic disadvantages to achieve through targeted tuition. Volunteer as a tutor with us to help these young people get the support they need.

What would I be doing?
You will work with one or two pupils for an hour a week across the course of a school term (8-10 weeks), supporting them in either maths or English. Tutoring usually takes place before or after school during the week. Sessions are delivered on the school premises at the same time each week. We provide all of our tutors with training and resources, and we will also process a free enhanced DBS check for you.

What will I get out of it?
By volunteering and tutoring for just one hour a week, you will be able to directly support disadvantaged young people to grow their confidence and help ensure they leave school with the grades needed to build a bright future.

Tutoring is also a great way to gain some valuable work experience, whether you are interested in a career in teaching or just looking to enhance your CV. Our pupils really enjoy working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and often see our volunteers as role models.

When can I start?
We run tutoring programmes throughout the academic year.
Once you’ve signed-up we will send you a full list of opportunities so that you can select one that works for you.

We reimburse travel expenses up to £5.00

We generally require our tutors to either be educated to degree level, or to be studying for a degree, and to have a B grade (or above) at A Level (or equivalent) in the subject they wish to tutor.  English or maths-related A Level subjects are also considered, such as: history, politics or sociology (for English tutors) and physics, chemistry and economics (for maths tutors).
