Volunteer opportunity description

Buddy Hub has created a novel way to help older people who are experiencing or at risk of loneliness and/ or isolation.

The ‘Friendship Wheel’

Volunteer Buddies will work in teams of three.  Each isolated Senior is matched with this team of three like-minded Buddies in their local community.

Seniors and Buddies are carefully matched based on location (no more than a 30-minute walk or cycle ride away of each other), interests and experiences.

The three Buddies in the ‘Friendship Wheel’ share visits with their Senior on their own terms, making this a fun and flexible way to get to know each other that can fit into anyone’s life. You will only need to commit to a minimum of 1-2 hours every 3 weeks. But a lot of good can come from just one hour.

By becoming a Buddy, you will not only be helping to alleviate loneliness in your area, but you will also be widening your own social circle.

Buddies aged 50 or over have the skills and experience to be fantastic Buddies, so this is a great opportunity for you to put them to to use. You can reach out to friends and ask if they want to sign up as a Buddy too.

At BuddyHub everyone looks out for each other so you’re more likely to feel supported and valued. That’s what it’s all about: making friends and enjoying each other’s company.

Expenses: We do not reimburse volunteer expenses as we don’t expect volunteers' would usually incur them.

  • Commitment. We ask a minimum engagement of one visit of 1-2 hours every 3 weeks for at least one year after we match you.

  • Are you in the area? We are operating in Islington, Hackney, Haringey and City of London. Check your postcode here.

  • Getting to know you. You’ll need to fill out your profile.

  • Essentials. We’ll need to apply for an Enhanced DBS Certificate (£13.50) for you if you don’t have one that has been issued within the last 2 years and/ or checks the Adults’ Barred List.*

  • Useful advice. You will need to go through our Buddy Training Manual.

  • Meet us in person. You’ll be invited for a friendly welcome chat at our offices before we match you with your Senior.

  • Age limit. Buddies must be over 18, but there’s no upper age limit to becoming a Buddy.

* Working with vulnerable adults is a regulated activity in the UK. BuddyHub requires all potential volunteers to have an Enhanced DBS Certificate that has checked the Adults’ Barred List. A conviction for a crime will not necessarily be a bar to volunteering with BuddyHub. We will take into account factors such as age at the time of the offense, type of offense and remoteness of the offense in time. Rehabilitation will also be taken into account in determining a person's suitability to volunteer with us.
