Volunteer opportunity description

BuddyHub has created a novel way to help people who are experiencing or at risk of loneliness and/ or isolation.

The ‘Friendship Wheel’

Each lonely Senior member is matched with up to three like-minded volunteer Buddies in their local community. We call this new social circle a 'Friendship Wheel'.

You are carefully matched based on location (no more than a 30-minute walk or cycle ride away of each other), interests and experiences.

The three Buddies in the ‘Friendship Wheel’ team up and share visits to their Senior, either 1:1 or as a group. The visits are on your own terms, making this a fun and flexible way to get to know each other that can fit into anyone’s life.

Buddies aged 50 or over have the skills and experience to be fantastic Buddies, so this is a great opportunity for you to put them to use. By becoming a Buddy, you will also be widening your own social circle. You can reach out to friends and ask if they want to sign up as a Buddy too.

At BuddyHub everyone looks out for each other so you’re more likely to feel supported and valued. That’s what it’s all about: making friends and enjoying each other’s company.

Expenses: We do not reimburse volunteer expenses as we don’t expect volunteers' would usually incur them.

  • Are you in the area? We operate in Islington, Hackney, Haringey and City of London.

  • Commitment. Minimum engagement of one visit of 1-2 hours every 3 weeks for at least one year after we match you.

  • Getting to know you. You’ll need to fill out your online profile on our website.

  • Essentials. You'll need an Enhanced DBS Certificate (£13.50) that has been issued within the last 2 years and/ or checks the Adults’ Barred List.* If you don't have one, don't worry, we'll help you with that!

  • Meet us in person. You’ll be invited for a friendly Welcome Chat at our offices.

  • Useful advice. You will need to go through our online Training Manual.

  • Age limit. Buddies must be over 18, but there’s no upper age limit to becoming a Buddy.

* Working with vulnerable adults is a regulated activity in the UK. BuddyHub requires all potential volunteers to have an Enhanced DBS Certificate that has checked the Adults’ Barred List. A conviction for a crime will not necessarily be a bar to volunteering with BuddyHub. We will take into account factors such as age at the time of the offense, type of offense and remoteness of the offense in time. Rehabilitation will also be taken into account in determining a person's suitability to volunteer with us.
