Volunteer opportunity description

Somali Advice and Forum Of Information (SAAFI) is a community-based organisation founded and led by British-Somali mothers from refugee background in Brent to support each other and their families for positive integration.

We have found out through our daily contacts with the Somali community, particularly young people, that the idea of volunteerism is not well understood with the community who may feel isolated and hard to reach from the wider UK community.

In this project, we will provide mentoring and coaching groups and one to one trainings followed by volunteering opportunities encouraging young people to interact and reach out into the communities around them.

SAAFI would like to recruit 20 young volunteers between the ages of 18 – 25 years of age from Somali origin for an opportunity to support hard to reach members of the community to volunteer on social action projects, which promote mentoring, and coaching.

We are expecting that this project will have the following impact:

  • Introduce the benefits of volunteering.

  • Assist young people and parents to overcome barriers to volunteering

  • Build confidence of young adults to volunteer

  • Peer support network to provide peer role models and support for young people within both their own age group and community.

  • Prevent and decrease in being excluded from school
