Volunteer opportunity description

Language Trainers lead classes of up to 15 adults who have little or no functional spoken English skills. Learners are often lacking in confidence in using English in their day to day life. Our course supports them to make appointments, use transport and other public services and attend doctors appointments indepenently. The vast majority of learners are Muslim women, with many coming from Bangladeshi and Somali backgrounds.

After receiving three days of training, Language Trainers will teach classes using a specially designed functional English course, adapting it as necessary to the particular requirements of the class.

Our next training sessions will be:
• 23rd to 25th July (10am – 3pm each day)
• 14th to 16th August (10am – 3pm each day)

Talking Together Language Trainers are expected to teach classes either twice a week for a 6 weeks or once a week for 12 weeks. Classes last 2 hours, and all classes take place during working hours Monday-Friday.

Classes are held at local community venues across London. We are primarily looking for volunteers who are able to teach in the following areas:

• Haringey
• Bethnal Green
• Ealing
• Islington

We may also need volunteers in Lewisham and Waltham Forest.

All classes will be starting in September.

Language Trainers will be expected to provide updates on how the classes are going and keep a register at all classes.

Volunteers will be supported throughout by our Project Coordinators.

Requirements

Volunteers don't need to have any experience of teaching as full training is provided. Experience working with people, and particularly people who are from minority backgrounds/speak English as a second language, would be helpful.

We are looking for people who have the following qualities:

- Enthusiastic and self-motivated.

- Good listening and communication skills

- Reliable, punctual and organised.

- Good team player and able to use initiative.

- Confident speaking in front of a group of people.

- Imaginative and able to think on your feet.

- Excellent spoken and written English

The following would also be desirable:

- An understanding of issues affecting people with little or no functional English.

- Willing to travel across the city to class locations.

Practical Considerations

Volunteers need to have excellent English skills and an interest in teaching.

Reasonable travel expenses will be covered.

The role may require a DBS check depending on where the classes take place.
