Volunteer opportunity description

The Museum of London tells the story of the capital from its first settlers to modern times.

Culture Mile presents the line-up for Smithfield 150. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Smithfield.  This is  London’s biggest birthday party.  Curated by the Museum of London., it is a two-day, free and fun-filled festival spectacular taking over the markets in Smithfield as well as the surrounding streets, lanes and hidden spaces around Farringdon across the August Bank Holiday weekend.  We need your assistance to make it an amazing and memorable event. 

Tasks and duties could be one or more of the following:

  • Meet and greet visitors providing maps of the events.
  • Talking to visitors if queues develop at entrances.
  • Assisting at the information point answering questions and directing people.
  • Helping on the table tennis and table football handing out bats and balls etc.
  • Assist with the dog show on Saturday.
  • Assist with the cabaret stage moving furniture around.
  • Assisting in the games area with people playing games and doing challenges.
  • Assist with the bingo show, handing out props etc.
  • Assisting with some of the craft workshops being an extra pair of hands or managing people showing up

Where: 

Smithfield Market, London EC1A 9PS

Briefing notes will be provided and any additional training can or may take place at Museum of London, 150 London Wall EC2Y 5HN prior to the event.   

When: 

Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 August 10am – 9pm

Duration:

At least one 2-3 hour shift from 10am-9pm.  Volunteers are welcome to register for more than one shift over the two day period

Refreshments will be provided.

 

Requirements

Requirements for the role are:

  • Good personable and verbal communication skills Comfortable in a ‘meet and greet role’ 
  • Able to use your own initiative but also able to ask for help when needed.
  • Willing to undertake a range of tasks including generally being helpful when it gets busy.

Our commitment to you:

  • Briefing notes will be provided on the event and activities to enable you to update visitors.
  • An opportunity to attend training where needed on specific activities planned for the day. 
  • Drinks and light refreshments will be made available on both days for volunteers. 
  • Expenses will be paid up to a maximum of £12 per day.
