Volunteer opportunity description

What are we looking for?

We are looking for volunteers to join our hospital team as a Library Service Volunteer at Hammersmith Hospital. Volunteers will run the mobile library trolley service on a selection of wards, offering reading materials to patients. We are looking for people to be the welcoming, supportive, and friendly point of contact for patients, providing them with some reading material during their stay.

What will I do as Library Service Volunteer?

  • Take the mobile library service around the hospital site to a number of in-patient wards
  • Help patients feel comfortable and at ease
  • Chat to patients about their taste in books, and offer appropriate reading material and support
  • Familiarise yourself with the book stock to best advise patients
  • Use a clicker to count and record the number of patients you chat to on shift
  • Pass on any feedback from patients about care to Clinical staff and to the Patient Advice Liaison Service as appropriate
  • Promote the mobile library service, including donating books and the wider work of Imperial Health Charity
  • Clean the library trolley before and after every shift and wipe down each book before giving to patients
  • Maintain the hygiene and quality of books and remove any soiled or damaged books

Why is this volunteer role so important?

We believe that volunteers can provide a huge amount of support to our patients, visitors and staff. You will provide a source of entertainment and activity for patients who may not have been able to prepare for a hospital stay. You will give patients an opportunity to have someone to talk to and something to read after the volunteer has left, providing a much-needed distraction.

What will you get out of it?

This role will provide you the rare opportunity to gain an insight into how these areas of our hospitals function and to see how our incredible hospital staff work. You will gain experience in a hands-on customer service role and have the opportunity to gain new skills. You will receive training, support from a dedicated Volunteering Manager and hospital staff, and a huge amount of satisfaction from giving back to your local community by supporting the NHS.

Expenses: In line with our volunteer expenses policy, we’ll reimburse out of pocket expenses for travel and refreshments.
