Volunteer opportunity description

Age UK Islington is a charity which uses innovative techniques to provide support to people over the age of 16, in the Borough of Islington, enabling them to use self-help approaches to manage their own health and wellbeing.

Are you a sociable person who likes chatting to people? The Wellbeing team makes contact with people who have been previous clients of Age UK Islington - to have a conversation and check how they are.

Loneliness is a massive problem in our society and through the conversation, you’ll be able to pick up if the person is lonely or struggling at all with any areas of their lives: getting out and about, looking after themselves, their homes etc.

A specially designed app will guide your conversation, and you’ll record key information from the conversation on the app. We can then pick this up and link people into social activities and other support.

This is very popular role with our volunteers, as the reward factor is high, and feedback is that people are so happy to receive a friendly call from someone who cares how they are getting on.

What we are looking for:

  • Comfortable having conversations with people on the phone
  • Ability to use computers confidently to be able to record details of conversations
  • Reliability, punctuality and empathy
  • Understanding of, and compliance with Age UK Islington key policies e.g. Safeguarding, Data Protection.

Time Commitment:
Ideally we are looking for someone who can make an on-going commitment.  We'll ask around 4 hours a week (Mon - Fri, 10am – 4pm, days are flexible).

What's needed? Interview & induction, 2 references, Enhanced DBS check (incl adult barred list)

Volunteer Re-imbursement

  • We will pay all reasonable travel expenses.
  • If you volunteer for half a day (3.5 hours or more) we will pay subsistence/lunch expenses.

Other Practical Considerations:

The Wellbeing 360 Service is based at our Manor Gardens head office, N7 6LA.

We will ask you to:

  • Complete an application form (incl 2 referees)
  • Short telephone conversation about what you’d like to achieve through volunteering
  • Have an informal interview
  • Enhanced DBS check
  • Attend a general induction session (information about our key policies).
