About the Domestic Abuse Service

We are looking for passionate volunteers who are able to make a difference to the lives of women and children who are fleeing from domestic abuse.

At Hestia we are dedicated to provide specialist support to women and children living in our refuges.  Each refuge has a dedicated staff team who will help families by offering emotional and practical support so that they can recover from their trauma.

You will be part of assessment and referral process, that will assist women to gain refuge space within our refuges across 12 boroughs.  Your support will change their lives and provide safety for those in crises.

We are looking for volunteers who have good communication skills over the phone. You will be fully trained to help deal with the complexity of the situations.

About Hestia

At Hestia, we support adults and children across London in times of crisis.

Last year we worked with more than 9,000 people, including victims of modern slavery, women and children who have experienced domestic abuse, young care leavers and older people. From giving someone a home to helping them to get the right mental health support, we support and enable people at the moment of crisis.

 

Requirements

Our Domestic Abuse service is looking to set up a centre where people call to get help with finding a refuge at the time of crisis. Female applicants only

Main Tasks:

•Taking calls to assess the risks and needs of the women fleeing from domestic abuse whilst under supervision/guidance of the refuge worker and the Service Manager

•To ensure confidentiality and professional boundaries are maintained at all times

•To use a range of skills and tools to make phone conversations with women effective, empowering, caring.

•To offer general admin help: typing, taking notes,  filing and scanning documents, keeping accurate records in our electronic filing system.  

•To develop positive relationships with staff members and women, promoting self -care

Skills and Experience Required:

•A desire to provide support to women who are in crises or traumatized  due to domestic abuse

•Calm, patient approach with empathy and a willingness to listen without judgement

•Passionate about  supporting women  with a diverse range of needs from a range of backgrounds

•Effective verbal and writing communication skills with proficiency in English

•Good time-management

•Experience of using email and internet, e-filing systems

Volunteer Commitment: Weekly or Bi-Weekly commitment of min 4 hours from Monday to Friday.

All volunteer require DBS and references to be completed by Hestia before volunteering.

Reimbursement: Hestia reimburses all travel within London and also £5 towards lunch.

Quarterly Volunteer Forum: We invite all our volunteers to our forum where you will be updated with the latest developments and changes in the organisation, provide you with details of the upcoming opportunities and events that are available to all our volunteers, along with providing a space for you to share your volunteering experiences.

Monthly highlights: Keeping volunteers updated with the organisation and opportunities we put together a short bulletin ‘monthly highlights’ each month and also a quarterly newsletter. You will have the opportunity to be involved in the editing, submitting articles.

Interview preparation: Once a month you can attend a mock interviews and Steps into Employment workshops with our partnership businesses.

Thank you events: The volunteering team organises two yearly events, one in June to mark Volunteers’ Week and a thank you lunch in December.

Other opportunities: At times we have other exciting opportunities for you to get involved with such as the BBC Singers, Equality and Diversity Groups, The Hestia Approach consultations and much more.

Training and Development: Not only will you receive an individual induction from the service, volunteering for Hestia opens up doors to our extensive face to face and E-learning programmes.

In 2016/2017 we have held a total of 62 training sessions covering Steps into Employment; CV Writing, Interviews, Applications and Cover Letters, Assertiveness and Confidence Building, Creative Writing, Mental Health Awareness, the law and First Aid, Suicide and Self Harm Awareness, Professional Boundaries, Empathy, Safeguarding Adults and Children, Substance Misuse, LGBTQ Awareness, Manual handling, Listening Skills, Motivation Interviewing, Sexual Health and Ethnicity, FGM, HIV, Working with Victims of Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault, Mindfulness, Recovery Approach and Co-Production, Group Facilitation Skills and Social Media and Cyber Bullying.
