Volunteer opportunity description

Family Friends supports disadvantaged families through our network of volunteers where we aim to 'help families to help themselves'.

Family Friends is a registered charity set up in 1993 to support disadvantaged families. Through a network of trained volunteers we provide befriending and mentoring services. We help families living in deprived areas of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and South East Brent. Through respect, encouragement and support, we aim to ‘help families to help themselves’; to discover their strengths and build on their coping skills.

What services we offer?

  • Parent befriending - For parents with a child or children under the age of 16 years.

  • Child/adolescent mentoring - For children/adolescents aged 5 years and above and under 16 years old.

Child/adolescent mentoring has a more emotional focus and is activity-based, while mentoring has an academic focus.
Family Friends is an Approved Provider of The Mentoring & Befriending Foundation, a Cabinet Office scheme.

Volunteers visit their families for two hours a week in the family’s home. We ask for a minimum of 6 month’s commitment once matched to the family.

Before being matched to a family, volunteers are all required to attend an interview and complete a 14-hour training course.

Satisfactory references and police checks are required. This process can take a while and it can be 2-4 months before the volunteer is introduced to the family.

Once volunteers are introduced, it is their responsibility to contact the office weekly to give feedback and receive supervision. This can be by email, phone or face-to-face. They are also expected to attend evening support meetings every 3 months where ongoing training is given.

We reimburse all travel expenses and other activities in relation to your time volunteering with Family Friends.

You must be a minimum of 23yrs old, be someone who is a good listener with an empathic nature, non-judgemental and reliable.
