Volunteer opportunity description

Princess Alice Hospice is a local charity dedicated to providing free, high-quality compassionate care and support for patients, their families and carers. We care for people with cancer and other illnesses living in a large part of Surrey, south west London and Middlesex.

The majority of our patients have their partner, a family member or friend acting as their main carer. The Carer’ Companion volunteer role is to provide emotional and social support for these people, who are caring for one of our patients. 

Time commitment

A flexible commitment of around 4 hours per week. 

Location

Community based in South West London.

Tasks and activities

  • To provide emotional and social support for carers. This is likely to be away from the home to provide some respite and allow the carer time to focus on themselves.
  • To support the carer whilst they care for the patient, through the bereavement and for 3 to 6 months after the patient’s death.
  • To keep a written note of each session with the carer and to write a closing summary for each case. Records must be kept in a private and secure place.
  • To attend monthly group supervision at the Hospice for Carer Companion volunteers.
  • To attend an annual review meeting.
  • To accept the guidance and decisions of the Patient and Family Support team.

Expenses: We can authorise pre agreed travel expenses, with receipts.

Training: You will need to attend 1st March Excellence in Volunteering training  and 7th March Carer's Companion training

Skills and personal qualities

  • Ideally some experience of caring for others, whether professional or personal
  • Have a genuine interest in other people and a desire to help
  • To be a good listener and have good communication skills
  • Have a non-judgmental attitude and a sensitive, empathic manner
  • To be organised, reliable and honest
  • Enjoy working as a member of a team
  • Respect confidentiality at all times
  • A commitment to our values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence.

Other requirements

  • Car driver and owner preferred, but not required
  • To have had no close bereavements in the past 2 years
