Volunteer opportunity description

The Royal Air Force Museum is Britain’s only national museum dedicated wholly to aviation.  Our purpose is to tell the story of the Royal Air Force through its people and collections.

RAF Museum Access Events:  Access Events are our programme of events that focus on our beautiful collection, in particular our aircraft and vehicles.

Access Events take place throughout the year (evening and weekends), and help us share the stories of these wonderful machines, and the men and women who flew and worked on them.

Volunteer to participate in our Access Events:  We are looking for more people to join the team for our jam-packed year of events.

So, can you see the beauty in our collection? Would you like to be the person who gets to get up close and personal to our beautiful planes and vehicles?  Join us as a volunteer and learn the history so that you can share it and be part of a big team on the events.

You don’t have to know everything, we offer the training and information for you to share.

You will:

  • be the go-to-person for an aircraft or vehicle that we will assign to you before the event
  • share facts and stories (we will give you this information)
  • help visitors to safely see inside the aircraft / vehicle or from a viewing platform.
  • provide a warm welcome and be a friendly face throughout the event
  • maintain an awareness of what’s happening around you to ensure, not only your safety and the visitors, but the care of the aircraft.

You will be:

  • confident in engaging and approaching our visitors
  • interested in helping to deliver these types of events
  • interested in learning RAF stories and sharing them
  • physically able to climb a number of steps, be active and able to bend and stretch (you will be on your feet for 2-3 hours).
  • able to work as a team
  • punctual and able to fulfil the commitments asked  personable, friendly and approachable
  • happy to be flexible on the night if the need arises

Before each event:

We will confirm the aircraft you will be with and provide you with some facts and interesting stories about the aircraft and its people.  You will have an opportunity to do more research if you wish.

At the start of the event, a briefing meeting takes place, where we provide you with relevant information specific to that event, and a reminder of the expectations.

Travel and food expenses will be reimbursed, in line with our policy.

Selecting Volunteers:

At the training and selection event, we will be selecting people who demonstrate the following:

  • good eye contact
  • ability to speak clearly
  • general enthusiasm for the events
  • a good connection/interaction with others
  • good general awareness
  • good physical fitness
