Volunteer opportunity description

We are looking for a volunteer session assistant for our “Key Changes Health and Social” weekly drop-in promoting positive health and wellbeing through music, sport, creativity and pro-social activities for people using mental health services.

The Organisation

Key Changes is a London-based charity that provides music services in hospitals and the community for young people and adults experiencing mental health problems. Our structured programme promotes recovery through songwriting, production and recording sessions on the wards and in our Central London studios, concerts, sports and pro-social activities, and support with progression to training, volunteering and work experience.

Activities / Tasks

We are looking for a volunteer session assistant for our “Key Changes Health and Social” weekly drop-in promoting physical health and wellbeing amongst our service users. The role will support the session manager and other professionals deliver a range of activities and maintain a welcoming, positive, caring and safe environment. You will respond flexibly to service users needs and promote positive physical and mental health through the following tasks:

  • Set up room and refreshments
  • Welcome and sign-in participants, provide information about activities
  • Support service users engage with activities including music, art, exercise, gardening, games, massage, talks, workshops
  • Serve refreshments and keep café clean and tidy
  • Coordinate and ensure safe use of equipment and materials
  • Keep space clutter free, clean and tidy throughout session
  • Maintain a professional, safe and non-judgemental environment and report any issues, concerns, accidents or incidents
  • Promote our other services to those attending and externally
  • Help put away equipment and materials at end of session


Time Commitment
We’d like someone to commit to 3 hours per week on Thursdays 4.00pm-7.00pm at our site in London EC1 (nearest tubes Old St, Barbican, Farringdon). We reimburse reasonable travel expenses against receipts and provide refreshments.
Suitable candidates should have the following attributes: 
Good communicator
Friendly, caring, calm and non-judgemental 
Enthusiastic about music, art, creativity and/or health and wellbeing and share this with others
Team player and ability to work alone 
Awareness of mental health issues
Understanding of the importance of confidentiality 
Remain sensitive to challenging behavioural and emotional situations that service users may find themselves in 
Willing to contribute to and attend our concerts and events 
The role will provide valuable experience working in a mental health setting and help to motivate and support participants recovering from mental illness through engaging in positive, healthy, pro-social activities. Training will be provided. 
You will be required to carry out an enhanced DBS disclosure which is free of charge and we will apply for on your behalf.
