Volunteer opportunity description

Main Purpose:

The Aquarium has a small permanent team of four people to run the aquarium department. We have 15 exhibits focusing on different geographical aquatic habitats containing species of flora and fauna correct to the location. Our aim is to inspire and amaze our visitors while providing education on every level, creating and maintaining exhibits to high very standard of practice. The aquarium team works with both national and international conservation and research organisations to carry out research projects. With such a busy Aquarium we have a great opportunity to involve volunteers who are interested in this area of the museum’s work.

Main objective:

Supporting the day-to-day maintenance and running of the Horniman Aquarium.

Main Activities (including but not limited to):

  • Cleaning and maintaining the aquarium displays
  • Feed preparation and feeding of a diverse range of aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates
  • Water quality analysis
  • Display development
  • Please note that this role involves physical duties

What we can offer participants:

  • The participants will learn about and gain practical experience in the following aspects of Aquarium husbandry:
  • Food preparation, storage and presentation, nutrition and enrichment techniques
  • Live food management
  • Water parameter importance, analysis techniques and managing parameter
  • Aquarium filtration
  • Display management
  • Fish health
  • Travel expenses within Greater London will be reimbursed and lunch if volunteering a full day

Requirements

Commitment:

  • Ideally we are looking for volunteers who are available for one day a week, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and/or Fridays
  • We would like the volunteers to start as soon as possible
  • We would prefer volunteers who are available for three months or longer, providing they are happy to continue beyond the four-week trial period.

The role would suit someone who:

  • Has a keen interest in aquatic life and keeping aquariums
  • Has experience in keeping aquariums or preferably qualifications in the subject of aquaculture or marine & fresh water biology
  • Is enthusiastic and eager to learn
  • Is conscientious and has a keen eye for detail.
