Volunteer opportunity description

As a busy charity, our Adventure Learning centres are under continuous need of care and maintenance, as well as exciting work on new projects as we continue to stay innovative in the facilities we provide. This results in an evergrowing list of projects to be worked on, and of course we are delighted when groups of volunteers want to support and get stuck in with helping us to make an impact to children’s lives.

We are able to offer a wide variety of volunteering opportunities for your team, and provide a really worthwhile day out close to London at our centres in South East London. We’ll start off by showing you around the centre and giving you some short information about the work we do and the impact your time will have. You will then get stuck in to your outdoor task/challenge which will involve varied and practical tasks.

On the day, no previous experience is required, and your group will be supervised at all times. A health and safety briefings are given, and we’ll do our best to make sure there are tasks for everyone; from tough to gentle.
As mentioned, the work our visiting groups carry out makes an enormous difference to Wide Horizons. These projects are wonderful opportunities to support the work of the charity and enhance outdoor learning, creating a valuable educational resource to be enjoyed by thousands more.
Example projects that your group could support with include:
  • Building and maintenance of our chicken coop and pig pen
  • Building a mud kitchen and water play for use by our ‘welly tots’ early years learning
  • Developing a wheelchair friendly giant bug hotel
2 of our centres are easily and quickly reachable from central London:
  • Wide Horizons Environment Centre, 77 Bexley Road, Eltham, London SE9 2PE.
  • Wide Horizons Woodland Centre, Constitution Rise, London SE18.

We very much focus on running tailored days for specific groups, so we'd be delighted to hear from you and start to design a volunteering experience specific to your groups preferences.

Although the effort put in by your group will be a gift in itself, we have to be realistic that holding these days costs us too. We do appreciate that taking staff away from their normal job is a 'cost’ to your company but we also have to account for paying charity staff to prepare for, and supervise, these days to ensure that everything is carried out safely and your employees are well looked after. We usually plan a small budget to cover simple things like materials as well as planning and on the day staff costs, and this can range from £10-£30 per person depending on the project. If you could advise as to what type of budget would be available, we’ll be able to offer a more accurate idea of exactly what project we could work on (as different projects have different material costs).

We can cater for volunteer groups of 10 - 30 people, so get in touch to let us know what you'd like from your day!
