Volunteer opportunity description

Help us bring the WW1 history of Kensington Gardens to life through activities, events, and immersive tours through a First World War trench.

Did you know that during WWI, Kensington Gardens was the site of Britain’s first ever Camouflage School? From papier-mâché soldiers to ships inspired by zebras, the Army experimented with different ways to mislead the enemy, right in the middle of London.

In September 2017, for two weeks only, we’ll be exploring this history through events & activities, including immersive trench tours with the 10th Essex Living History Group. That’s right – for two weeks only, there will be a full sized trench in Kensington Gardens.

Can you help us bring this history to life for our visitors?

We need volunteers to:

• Support trench tours – welcoming groups, providing safety briefings, escorting groups through the trench to meet the living historians, and supporting trench evacuation.

• Run activities with visitors to introduce them to ideas of WW1 camouflage.

We are looking for people who:

• Like working with others.

• Are confident communicating important information.

• Have an interest in history and the Parks – no knowledge required!

• Are available for a training session on the morning of Monday 11 September.

• Are available between Monday 11 and Sunday 24 September and keen to volunteer for a minimum of two days, between 9.30am and 5.30pm, in this period.

This is a fantastic and fun opportunity to discover and be part of other people’s discovery of a strange, surprising and unexplored history. You’ll get the chance to talk to and learn from the 10th Essex living historians – masters of bringing the past to life. And you’ll get great experience working with a huge range of people.

Lunch, travel expenses and uniforms (not necessarily military, but we’ll do our best on request...) will be provided.
