Description & History

We are an independent charity raising funds for projects, research, equipment and training at Charing Cross, Hammersmith, Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea, St Mary’s and The Western Eye hospitals. We’ve awarded more than £12million to 300 healthcare projects to date, and in the autumn of 2015 committed a further £20million to the hospitals of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust over the next three years for a series of major projects.

We are currently raising money for our £2million More Smiles Appeal for the expansion of the children’s intensive care unit at St Mary’s Hospital, and are also investing in major projects at the Trust to help transform healthcare and improve patient experience, including providing £7.2million to support the redesign of key outpatient areas and services.

Every year, we award about £1million to projects led by Trust and Imperial College staff. Previous projects have helped high-risk victims of domestic violence in A&E, revolutionised the way cancer patients take control of their care, and helped countless patients going through financial hardship as a result of illness.

We also use art as a means to engage with patients and staff through our amazing collection of 1,600 artworks, which play a crucial part in creating a warmer, more welcoming environment for all. Work includes the striking Bridget Riley murals on the 9th and 10th floors of the QEQM Building at St Mary’s Hospital, unique Julian Opie artworks in the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s and a David Mach wall sculpture in the riverside entrance to Charing Cross Hospital.
